With the news that “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier” is being delayed from its original August release date on Disney+ due to the COVID-19 production delays, it appeared that the Mouse House’s streaming platform wasn’t going to have any new Marvel content for quite a while. But in fact, the service is set to premiere “Marvel 616” soon enough and has released a couple of teasers to help promote the new docuseries.
Unlike the other offerings from Marvel Studios, “Marvel 616” doesn’t feature big superhero fights of A-list actors donning ridiculous costumes. Instead, it’s a docuseries that talks about the comic book inspirations for the MCU and the origins of the Marvel Universe. But the series isn’t just a boring History Channel-esque look back. Instead, each episode is created by a different filmmaker covering a different topic. And for those that aren’t complete nerds, like myself, the ‘616’ of the title refers to the number designation of the original comic book Marvel Universe.
As seen in the two clips, one of the episodes, dubbed “Higher, Further, Faster,” talks about the rise of Captain Marvel in the comic books and how the inclusivity of that series helped launch similar titles like “Ms. Marvel” and others. The second clip shows comedian Paul Scheer speaking with various comic book creators about the lesser-known characters in the Marvel Universe that have some of the strangest origins that you’ve ever heard (Mongoose blood? Really?).

Here’s the synopsis:
