Coming into Cannes 2023, there was a lot of discussion about Todd Haynes’ new dramedy, “May December.” Haynes is one of the most acclaimed filmmakers working today and his latest stars none other than Julianne Moore and Natalie Portman, two of the most respected actors in the world. It appears, judging by early reviews, “May December” delivers the goods and is likely going to be in the mix come awards season. And now, we have the first clip from the film to give film fans who aren’t at Cannes a chance to get a glimpse at the new film.
“May December” follows the story of an actress (Portman) as she is doing research for a new role. She is tasked with starring in a project that is inspired by the relationship between an older woman (Moore) and a much younger man (Charles Melton). And for research, she begins to shadow the woman and watch their relationship, which was tabloid fodder years before.
In our review of the film from Cannes, we commended Haynes’ film, especially with the superb performances from the three leads. In addition, the review compliments the filmmaker’s “masterly manipulation of tone and perspective.”
An exact release date for “May December,” outside of Cannes, has yet to be revealed, but it’s assumed we’ll get it just in time for awards season. You can watch the first clip from the film below:
