If you follow filmmaker Jordan Vogt-Roberts on any form of social media, two things become readily apparent. First, the man has a lovely beard. As someone who also sports prominent facial hair, this is a sight to behold. And secondly, Vogt-Roberts has a love of video games, primarily “Metal Gear Solid,” which he has been trying to bring to the big screen for years. Well, after months of silence, we finally have some big news about that highly-anticipated feature.

According to Deadline, Oscar Isaac is set to star as Solid Snake in “Metal Gear Solid.” As mentioned, the film is set to be directed by Jordan Vogt-Roberts, who is coming off the success of his other franchise feature, “Kong: Skull Island.” For those unfamiliar with “Metal Gear Solid,” well, it’s a long story. But the SparkNotes version is that Solid Snake is a badass soldier that infiltrates an evil organization that is hellbent on using nuclear weapons and other baddies in a huge war. The video games are notable for their stealthy gameplay and focus on cinematic storytelling, always utilizing great voice actors and top-shelf visuals.
While Isaac isn’t normally the type of guy you’d see associated with this type of big-budget, blockbuster tentpole, this is exactly what he’s been doing in recent years. We’ve seen Isaac star in the “Star Wars” sequel trilogy over the past half-decade, as well as a rather unfortunate role in “X-Men: Apocalypse.” And just recently, he signed on to enter the Marvel Cinematic Universe as the title character in the forthcoming Disney+ series, “Moon Knight.” So, we are officially knee-deep in the era of big-budget Oscar Isaac.

Sony is the studio backing “Metal Gear Solid,” but we have no idea when this film will actually begin production. Isaac’s schedule is pretty chock full at the moment, so it’s not likely ‘MGS’ will enter filming in the next couple of months, but if nothing else, this announcement shows progress in Vogt-Roberts’ crusade to bring a “Metal Gear Solid” feature film to fans.
