Ever since Frances McDormand’s impassioned acceptance speech at the Oscars, the term “inclusion rider” has been a big topic of conversation. For those that haven’t Googled it, an inclusion rider is a stipulation that can be made in an actor or actress’ contract that guarantees there would be a certain level of diversity in the cast and crew. While the inclusion rider is still being discussed, and there’s not a whole lot of movement on the subject in the last few days, one actor/filmmaker is speaking up about it.
Coming off the high of “Black Panther,” actor Michael B. Jordan is ready to take his career to the next level, in front of, and behind, the camera. On Instagram, recently, Jordan posted about how his production company, Outlier Society, will be adopting the inclusion rider for all future projects.

“In support of the women & men who are leading this fight, I will be adopting the Inclusion Rider for all projects produced by my company Outlier Society. I’ve been privileged to work with powerful woman & persons of color throughout my career & it’s Outlier’s mission to continue to create for talented individuals going forward,” says Jordan. While this is definitely not on the same level of a Warner Bros. or Disney adopting the policy, Jordan’s promise is perhaps the first step, and many other production companies could follow suit.
Outlier Society has several high-profile projects in various stages of development. There’s a sci-fi drama being developed for Netflix titled “Raising Dion,” a reboot of “The Thomas Crown Affair,” a project for Oprah’s OWN Network, and a film based on a YA novel titled “The Stars Beneath Our Feet,” which is set up to become Jordan’s directorial debut.
It looks like McDormand’s speech is already making waves, and it’ll be interesting to see how other Hollywood figures respond.
