It’s been two years since Destin Cretton‘s lovely "Short Term 12" premiered at SXSW, became an instant sensation, and went on to win a slew of awards. I would’ve thought Hollywood would be breaking his down his door and he’d be already at work on his next feature, and indeed, he was set to helm "Glass Castle" with Jennifer Lawrence slated to star, but that project stalled after the actress dropped out.
Finally, Cretton will direct a feature adaptation of Bryan Stevenson‘s multiple award-winning non-fiction book "Just Mercy: A Story Of Justice And Redemption" with Michael B. Jordan attached to star. Even more, Variety reports that the hot property has already attracted the interest of Will Smith and Denzel Washington for possible other roles in the tale of a young man sentenced to death for a murder he didn’t commit. Here’s the book synopsis:
The project is set up at Broad Green Pictures who beat out big league players like Paramount and Universal for the rights to the book. No word yet on who will write the screenplay, but let’s hope this one goes from development to production quickly.
