Got a Tip?

Mike Patton Lends Cookie Monster Growling To ‘I Am Legend’; More Film Projects On The Way

Mike Patton, former Faith No More/Mr. Bungle frontman and current Peeping Tom/various revolving projects noisemaker has lent his howling voice to the Will Smith film “I Am Legend” according to the metal fanatics over at Blabbermouth.

The film, which we mentioned yesterday, jacks some of Clint Mansell’s “The Fountain” score in its trailer, is apparently utilizing Patton’s Cookie Monster growling and effects-heavy voice to create the sound of the creatures in this post-apocalyptic big budget late season tent pole film.

Maybe the film’s producers heard Björk’s throaty Medulla record which featured Patton’s Eskimo-chanting screeching and gurgled sounds (god, that was a fun listen, huh?)

Patton isn’t exactly new to the film world, he actually starred in the little-seen 2005 indie film, “Firecracker” (he had 2nd billing after Karen Black; – he actually replaced Dennis Hopper who left the project before it filmed) and has composed lots of music for video games, including “The Darkness” and “The Portal.” In 2008 will be voice the lead in videogame “Bionic Commando” and is contributing vocal effects to “Left 4 Dead.”

Next up for the multi-tasking Patton? He’s be composing his first entire original score to the film noir short, “A Perfect Place.” Marking the directorial debut of Derrick Scocchera, one of the founders of Fantoma Films (known for their catalog of rare, cult films reissued on DVD), the 20 minute short will focuses on “a pair of bumbling friends trying to dispose of a body.” Shot in black and white, the film short will be released as a double-disc with the score and distributed together via Ipecac Recordings in March of 2008.

According to a February 2006 article with MTV, the ex-FNM singer also scheduled to compose the music to the romantic thriller, “Pinion,” which is due sometime in 2008 if IMDB is accurate (which it is only half the time). He is also scheduled to appear on the Massive Attack album Weather Underground in ’08.

The score to “I Am Legend” was composed by James Newton Howard, but there’s no details on a disc yet nor word on whether Patton go to meet Will Smith and discuss a rap sequel to “Epic.”
