‘Miller’s Girl’ Trailer: Martin Freeman & Jenna Ortega Blur Lines In A Student/Teacher Relationship

Quick, cue up someone yelling “groomer!” at the idea of an inappropriate student/teach dynamic in the trailer for the new dramatic thriller, “Miller’s Girl.” While it looks and sounds salacious, the drama— about a creative writing assignment that yields complex results between a teacher and his talented student— seems like it’s a little bit more nuanced and complex than just that (well, hopefully).

Written and directed by Jade Halley Bartlett, an actor turned filmmaker, the drama is her directorial debut and is coming out in January via Lionsgate.

The film stars Martin Freeman and Jenna Ortega as the teacher and student in question, with Dagmara Domińczyk, Bashir Salahuddin, and Gideon Aldon in supporting roles.

The question you’re likely asking is, do they go there? And well, watch the trailer for something that gets a little bit more complicated and manipulative and perhaps evolves into more of a thriller about betrayal, but not necessarily the type you’re likely imagining (think teacher’s pet that’s rebuffed).

Here’s the official synopsis:

A talented young writer (Jenna Ortega) embarks on a creative odyssey when her teacher (Martin Freeman) assigns a project that entangles them both in an increasingly complex web. As lines blur and their lives intertwine, professor and protégé must confront their darkest selves while straining to preserve their individual sense of purpose and the things they hold most dear.

“Miller’s Girl” opens in theaters on January 26 via Lionsgate. Watch the new trailer below.
