Got a Tip?

Christopher McQuarrie Says 2-Part ‘Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning’ Won’t Be The End, Already Has Ideas For “What Comes Next”

Next month we’re getting another dose of star Tom Cruise risking his life doing ridiculous stunts for our entertainment with “Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One.” The seventh installment in the Ethan Hunt saga will be one half of a two-part story. However, while the two films had originally felt like a swan song for Cruise’s Teflon action hero, writer/director Christopher McQuarrie is suggesting there is much more gas in the tank.

A tweet from Fandango’s Erik Davis (see below) highlights that McQuarrie stated “Dead Reckoning” won’t be the “end of the series” and that “they already have ideas for what comes next.”

There has been some sense this could be how Cruise off-ramps from the franchise to hand it off potentially to other characters like Rebecca Ferguson‘s Ilsa Faust or even someone brand new like Hayley Atwell‘s Grace. We really won’t know what to expect from this potential “Mission Impossible 9” until we watch how the second part ends. It also remains to be seen if Cruise will be involved in this hypothetical ninth film. At the very least, it’s great to hear that McQuarrie still has the drive to continue with more sequels.

We’ll likely learn more about these “ideas” once other interviews probe McQuarrie’s thoughts for the future. Also, it’s worth noting that the filmmaker is developing other film projects outside of the “Mission: Impossible” franchise with Cruise.

Here is the next film’s official logline from Paramount Pictures:

In Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One, Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) and his IMF team embark on their most dangerous mission yet: To track down a terrifying new weapon that threatens all of humanity before it falls into the wrong hands. With control of the future and the fate of the world at stake, and dark forces from Ethan’s past closing in, a deadly race around the globe begins. Confronted by a mysterious, all-powerful enemy, Ethan is forced to consider that nothing can matter more than his mission – not even the lives of those he cares about most.

“Dead Reckoning Part One” will hit theaters on July 12.
