With “WandaVision” just around the corner, it appears that things are beginning to heat up at Marvel Studios in terms of its TV slate. Perhaps the biggest news, even more so than casting of “She-Hulk” and “Ms. Marvel,” is the fact that Oscar Isaac is slated to play the lead in “Moon Knight.” And now, it appears Marvel Studios has found the director to helm the new Disney+ series.

According to Deadline, Marvel Studios has hired Egyptian filmmaker Mohamed Diab to take over the “Moon Knight” series. For those unaware, “Moon Knight” is the story of Marc Spector, a former mercenary that is imbued with the power of Egyptian moon god Khonshu and fights crime. However, he’s also a man with PTSD and multiple personalities, making him similar to Batman but with even more severe mental illness.
Diab is probably best known for his directorial debut, “Cairo 678,” which was released in 2010. Since then, he’s continued to serve as a screenwriter, as well as directing his most recent feature, 2016’s “Eshtebak (Clash),” which premiered in the Un Certain Regard section of Cannes. With a fairly small filmography, it’s clear that Marvel Studios is sticking with its tried and true formula of finding younger filmmakers and molding them into team players that are able to succeed and push the brand forward. Basically, if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.
However, unlike “Ms. Marvel” and “She-Hulk” (to a lesser extent), there’s going to be a lot of expectations placed on “Moon Knight.” Not only is the character a strange choice for Marvel Studios, considering his dark, gritty stories, but with Isaac in the lead role, there’s going to be a ton of hype about this Disney+ series, which will certainly lead to films and other crossovers. No offense to Iman Vellani and Tatiana Maslany, respectively, but with this lead actor and now a new filmmaker, “Moon Knight” is casting a shadow over them both.
