Besides the fine performances by Brad Pitt and Jonah Hill, along with Bennett Miller’s impeccable direction of this year's “Moneyball,” another aspect of the film worth singling out for praise is the score by Mychael Danna. Though as we mentioned on our list of Best Scores and Soundtracks of 2011, post-rock outfit This Will Destroy You also had a hand in creating one of the film’s signature pieces of music with the track “The Mighty Rio Grande,” which was also featured prominently in the film’s trailer.
Now it looks as if This Will Destroy You are intending to extend their contributions to the world of film beyond their work in "Moneyball," as they are set to provide the score to director Rui Cavendar’s documentary “The Deep Field.” The following is a synopsis of the documentary taken from Cavendar’s Kickstarter page for the project:
“’The Deep Field’ is a documentary about the dying experience and the period of healing and self-discovery that comes after a loved one passes. The film is a meditative and poetic look at my family uniting and coming to terms with the decay and death of my 102-year-old grandmother in the final weeks of her life at home in January 2010.”
There’s a trailer on the page, which is about as unflinching and moving as the above synopsis may suggest, and features the This Will Destroy You track "Killed the Lord, Left for the New World.”
The Kickstarter page offers a variety of ways to help fund Cavendar’s film, and includes a tidbit about This Will Destroy You and their contribution to the “Moneyball” soundtrack. “The Mighty Rio Grande” was a sort of overarching theme in the film, and it’s reassuring to see a band of this talent expand their horizons further into the world of scoring films.
