Netflix Greenlights 'Monster' Limited Series From Ryan Murphy About Jeffrey Dahmer

After already exploring the halls of Nurse Ratched’s house of horrors, as well as telling the story of another serial killer in “The Assassination of Gianni Versace,” Ryan Murphy is about to tell the story of another monster: Jeffrey Dahmer. Netflix has reportedly greenlit Ryan Murphy’s limited series “Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story.”

The news comes from Deadline, with a report that Murphy and his longtime collaborator Ian Brennan have sold “Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story” to Netflix. So far we only have one piece of casting news: Richard Jenkins will play Dahmer’s father Lionel. Carl Franklin, who directed episodes of “Manhunter” and “The Leftovers” will direct episodes of the series alongside Janet Mock who will also write for the show.

Unlike previous works about the titular serial killer, including the surprisingly good “My Friend Dahmer,” Murphy’s “Monster” will focus less on the killer, rapist and cannibal, and more on telling a story from the point of view of Dahmer’s victims. The show “dives deeply into the police incompetence and apathy that allowed the Wisconsin native to go on a multiyear killing spree.” The show will reportedly depict “at least 10 instances where Dahmer was let go after being apprehended.”

Just like “Ratched” ended up pretty much like an “American Horror Story” spin-off, so does “Monster” sound a lot like a story meant for “American Crime Story,” focusing on the failures of law enforcement and the systems of white privilege, racism, and homophobia that allowed Dahmer to run free for so long.

Per Deadline, “Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story” will start production in January.
