Next week, Netflix enters the Oscar race with the drama “Mudbound.” The film is packed with talent, from director Dee Rees (“Pariah,” “Bessie“) to a cast that includes Jason Clarke, Garrett Hedlund, Carey Mulligan, and Mary J. Blige. And the soundtrack is top notch too, with the multi-talented Tamar-kali lending her talents, and composing the score.
Based on the book by Hillary Jordan, “Mudbound” follows the McAllan family, newly transplanted from the quiet civility of Memphis and unprepared for the harsh demands of farming. Despite the grandiose dreams of Henry, his wife Laura struggles to keep the faith in her husband’s losing venture. Meanwhile, Hap and Florence Jackson — sharecroppers who have worked the land for generations — struggle bravely to build a small dream of their own despite the rigidly enforced social barriers they face. The war upends both families’ plans as their returning loved ones, Jamie McAllan and Ronsel Jackson, forge a fast but uneasy friendship that challenges the brutal realities of the Jim Crow South in which they live.
It’s a potent backdrop, and Tamar-kali — who has done everything from making her mark in the New York punk underground to touring with Outkast — impresses with her work, which you can hear exclusively below in “Intro/Mudbound Theme” and “Father & Son Undone Pt. 2.”
The “Mudbound” soundtrack will be released by Milan Records digitally on November 17th with the CD arriving on December 1st. Netflix is airing “Mudbound” on November 17.
