Time is a flat circle, or perhaps in this case, a triple axel. Director Craig Gillespie is currently enjoying some of the best notices of his career thanks to “I, Tonya,” his energetic take on the life of Tonya Harding. However, the film isn’t the first time he touched upon that figure skating era.
Way back in 1993, the filmmaker was cutting his teeth shooting commercials (something he still regularly does now), and one of his assignments was directing a Campbell’s Soup commercial starring Harding’s friend turned rival Nancy Kerrigan. She had just won a bronze medal at the 1992 Winter Olympics, and was expected to make an impact at the Lillehammer Games. Not long after, Kerrigan would be making headlines for very different reasons.

“I did the Nancy Kerrigan Campbell’s Soup spot in 1993, three months before [the incident with Harding]. I didn’t know who she was; we got this assignment to do this spot with a skater, went up to Canada and shot the commercial, which I had storyboarded,” Gillespie told The LA Times.
The director remembers the experience and working with Kerrigan fondly. “She was totally game . . . she was up for everything,” he said to Vanity Fair.
So, take a trip down memory lane before with the commercial before….taking a trip another trip down memory with “I, Tonya,” now playing in limited release.
