Reed Hastings wasn’t kidding. This week, the Netflix founder and CEO went on CNBC and said that he wanted the streaming service to cancel more shows. What he meant that by that statement, was Netflix was almost doing too well, and he wanted their content team to take more risks with programming, even if they don’t always work out. Well, as if by prophecy, another Netflix show has hit the chopping block.
Lana and Lilly Wachowski’s “Sense8” has been canceled after two seasons, and one Christmas special. The ambitious sci-fi series was shot on a number of international locations, and told the story of a group of “sensates,” who were connected mentally and emotionally. Of course, we don’t really know how many or how few people watched the show, as Netflix doesn’t reveal their numbers, but it would probably be safe to say it had cult appeal at best. It was never a mainstream hit like “Stranger Things,” for example. Here’s what Netflix said about the series in an official statement (via Variety):
After 23 episodes, 16 cities and 13 countries, the story of the Sense8 cluster is coming to an end. It is everything we and the fans dreamed it would be: bold, emotional, stunning, kick ass, and outright unforgettable. Never has there been a more truly global show with an equally diverse and international cast and crew, which is only mirrored by the connected community of deeply passionate fans all around the world. We thank Lana, Lilly, Joe and Grant for their vision, and the entire cast and crew for their craftsmanship and commitment.
