Back in 2018, Netflix had a plan to develop an animated series based on the books of beloved children’s author Roald Dahl. Included in the deal were such classics as “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” and “Matilda,” both of whom have seen their fair share of movie adaptations in the past. As if that flurry of news was not enough, the Daily Mail‘s Baz Bamigboye has also reported that the role of evil headmistress Miss Trunchbull will be played by Ralph Fiennes.
While Miss Trunchbull is, as the name suggests, a female character in the original Dahl novel, the Broadway role was originated by actor Bertie Carvel after a non-gendered casting call. Carvel was nominated for a Tony for the role; this success has led to the character being played by a male actor on Broadway ever since. While Warchus still believes that the character could be played by a non-male actor at any time, Netflix clearly decided to stick with show tradition, whether they finalize the contract with Fiennes or not.

Over the years, “Matilda” has been adapted for the stage and screen multiple times, including the 1996 film starring Mara Wilson and the 2013 Broadway musical that will serve as the basis for the Netflix series.
