Hulu had a slew of critically acclaimed TV series last year, like “The Dropout,” “Pam & Tommy,” and “Fleishman Is In Trouble.” So what will its big hits of 2023 be? “Great Expectations” may be one of them, considering Olivia Colman headlines the cast.
British screenwriter Steven Knight adapts Charles Dickens‘ novel for BBC and Hulu as a six-part series, which premieres stateside on the streamer next month. “Great Expectations” follows young orphan Pip, played in this version by Fionn Whitehead, as Colman’s Miss Havisham begins his social education at Satis House. There, Pip learns about society, its conventions and its foibles, and also about love, in no small part due to Miss Havisham’s adopted daughter, Estella.
Alongside Colman and Whitehead, “Great Expectations” also stars Shalom Brune-Franklin as Estella and Tom Sweet as young Pip. The series also stars Ashley Thomas, Johnny Harris, Hayley Squires, Owen McDonnell, and Laurie Ogden. Trystan Gravelle, Matt Berry, and Rudi Dharmalingam round out the main cast.
Knight also serves as executive producer on the series with Tom Hardy, Ridley Scott, Dean Baker, David W. Zucker, Kate Crowe, and Tommyt Bulfin. Brady Hood and Samira co-direct the show’s six episodes.
How will this rendition of “Great Expectations” compare to the one just over a decade ago with Ralph Fiennes, Helena Bonham Carter, and Jeremy Irvine? Find out when the series premieres on Hulu on March 26. Watch the new trailer for the show below.
