The star power has increased, but it looks like Alex Ross Perry is still putting his trademark lo-fi aesthetics on the upcoming “Golden Exits.” His new film, gearing up to premiere at the Sundance Film Festival, reteams him with “Listen Up Philip” lead Jason Schwartzman for a New York City story in which an outsider shakes things up.
Emily Browning, Adam Horovitz, Mary-Louise Parker, Lily Rabe, and Chloë Sevigny round out the cast for the film about a young woman from Australia whose presence begins to splinter two families. “Much of this film is about finding acceptance with your work, even when it fails to excite and inspire you,” the director told the LA Times.

As for Browning’s character, who proves pivotal, Perry had some very specific inspiration. “We thought about some of Eric Rohmer’s female characters. I especially looked at ‘Boyfriends And Girlfriends‘ and ‘Rendezvous In Paris.’ Naomi feels like she comes from the Rohmer world: Just passing through some place for some time, and the movie is about observing these little moments and connections that happen or nearly happen,” he said. Here’s the official synopsis for the film:
Nick has settled into a safe existence in a small pocket of Brooklyn, where he currently toils on an archival project for his father-in-law. Soon, 20-something Naomi arrives from Australia to assist Nick for the semester. She has no acquaintances in the city beyond a loose family connection to Buddy, a music producer who lives in the same neighborhood. For the few months she spends around Nick, Buddy, and their families, Naomi’s presence upsets the unpleasant balance holding these two households together.
“Golden Exits” has its World Premiere screening at Sundance on Sunday, January 22nd at 6 PM at the Library Center Theatre.
