It was 2004 that the trio consisting of actors Simon Pegg, Nick Frost, and director Edgar Wright gave audiences the innovative and highly entertaining zombie comedy “Shaun of the Dead.” While it helped to continue the spread of the zombie film renaissance led by Danny Boyle’s “28 Days Later,” it also helped foster the careers of three unique British talents. Pegg and Frost teamed up with Wright again in 2007 for “Hot Fuzz,” the second part of their unofficially titled "Three Flavours Cornetto" trilogy (a loving nod to Krzysztof Kieslowski), with the former actor going on to see his name in lights with turns in major blockbusters like J.J. Abrams’ “Star Trek" reboot and “Mission: Impossible 3” (and of course, the upcoming 'Ghost Protocol').
Meanwhile, Wright also broke from the pack to direct the genre bending new cult classic “Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World.” Though as anyone who keeps an eye on the progression of these individuals careers will know, with each film that doesn’t involve getting the gang back together, the following press rounds are filled with questions regarding when we’re going to receive another hilarious farce in the 'Cornetto' trilogy.
Well it looks as if it isn’t Pegg or Wright fanning the flames this time, but rather Nick Frost, the third leg of their metaphorical tripod who's spoken up regarding when exactly they’ll have their next collaboration going. Currently titled “The World’s End,” Pegg has already teased us twice this year both following the release of “Paul” (where he co-wrote the script and acted alongside Frost) and this summer, saying that he and Wright were going to get down to business writing the film as soon as he finished up promotional rounds for “Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol” and “The Adventures of Tintin.” The latter film’s press rounds are where Nick Frost, who once again plays alongside Pegg, this time as one half of the inept detective team who share the name Thompson, had an intriguing little nugget of information for ComingSoon.
Frost told the site, "There is a draft out there, which I've read, and it's great, and I think our plan is to crack on and shoot next year. Touch wood. They move and they change but we definitely want to get on with it." [editors note: We talked to Nick Frost at the "Tintin" red carpet last night after this interview and he was much more non-comittal with a "maybe" at best for next year.]
While we’re also touching wood that this actually happens, though if it does, it likely won't be until the latter part of the year, mostly because Pegg will be spending the first half of 2012 shooting “Star Trek 2.” Wright is also busy, with his equally talked about adaptation of Marvel’s “Ant-Man” which he wrote with “Attack the Block” director Joe Cornish (a draft has been handed in to the comics studio), and “Baby Driver” over at Working Title. Word has been quiet on both projects lately, so they may have temporarily moved to the backburner. As for Frost, his calendar for 2012 is looking a bit more flexible (for now) but he'll be out stumping for his turns in “Snow White and the Hunstmen” and “Ice Age: Continental Drift.”
This writer would certainly love to see this creative trio hunker down and shoot the final part of their trilogy as it should be a raucous blast of fun. But all we can do for now is play the waiting game and see if Frost is on the money or if we'll still be asking about this during press rounds for "Star Trek 2."
