When it was originally announced as a series, “Big Little Lies” was thought to be a limited event that would end after the first batch of episodes. However, after scooping pretty much every major award and securing some impressive ratings, HBO backed up a dump truck of money on the front doors of everyone involved and got a Season 2 in the works. Now, as Season 2 begins its home stretch, at least one of the stars is already talking about a potential Season 3.
Speaking to The Daily Telegraph, star Nicole Kidman brought up the idea of a Season 3 to her Emmy-winning series. And as you might expect, she thinks everyone is on board, but there’s a big caveat.

“I think we would love to do a season three because there is certainly ideas, but we would not do it without all of the same people involved … even the kids,” said Kidman.
Of course, doing a potential Season 3 with the same cast and crew involved seems to be the sticking point. Obviously, HBO would love to keep this Emmy-winning ratings champ going, but that requires a lot of money. Back when the network announced Season 2, after securing deals with all the major stars, including Kidman, Shailene Woodley, Reese Witherspoon, Zoe Kravitz, and Laura Dern (not to mention Meryl Streep!), the executives in charge basically said it wouldn’t be fiscally possible to continue the series after this season.

Oh, and let’s not forget that the series is based on a novel, and the author had to write a brand-new story just so the cast and crew could adapt it for the new season. That means that author Liane Moriarty would likely have to envision a new story to keep it going.
All that to say, even though Kidman would love a Season 3, the odds are that “Big Little Lies” is probably done after this batch of episodes. Stranger things have happened, though.
