Are any of us old enough to remember the 1980 comedy “Private Benjamin” starring Goldie Hawn as a sheltered young high society woman joins the army on a whim and finds herself in a more difficult situation than she ever expected — zoing!
They’re producing a remaking with the new Goldie Hawn, Anna Faris. We like Faris a lot, she’s funny and can elevate mediocre comedy material with her sheer force of charming will, but doesn’t this sound a little beneath her? Jody Hill shouldn’t you be finding her better work? There’s nothing particularly memorable or great about the original film, but we suppose we’re not going to hate on this choice and hell, the film earned earned three Oscar noms back in the day. The film is the third Warner Bros. library title after, “Vacation” and “Police Academy” that New Line is redoing. Someone’s run out of new ideas?
Writer/director Amy Talkington is in discussions to pen. Maybe she’ll direct as well? She wrote the “Valley Girl” remake for MGM too, plus the female-centric film, “Queen of the Rodeo,” for Fox. Faris is on a roll, her next flick, “What’s Your Number?” with Chris Evans shoots this summer.
