As if anticipation wasn’t high already with David Lowery’s upcoming film, “The Old Man & The Gun,” the added story of Robert Redford’s retirement makes the film even more interesting. And judging by the new trailer, there’s this meta feeling throughout the footage that just seems to signal that Redford’s choice to leave acting behind after this role might have been part of his performance.
The trailer, courtesy of Yahoo, gives viewers the basic premise of the “mostly true story.” The titular “old man,” played by Robert Redford, is a seasoned bank robber that used the “gun” to help pull off over a dozen heists. However, he also has the bad habit of being caught and thrown into prison. And lucky for him, Redford’s character has the apparent superpower to escape from prison each time.
Then, things change as he comes across Sissy Spacek’s character while escaping police. He starts to question his future, as he begins the classic “one final heist” that pretty much spells doom in most films. But even with the fairly standard plot, the acting in the footage shown proves that there’s a lot more going on in Lowery’s “A Ghost Story” follow-up.
Redford and Spacek are joined by Casey Affleck, Danny Glover, and Tom Waits. And it looks like each one is bringing their A-game to this film, giving Redford a proper send-off.
Lowery is probably best known as the director of the live-action “Pete’s Dragon,” but many around here are fans of his previous films, the aforementioned “A Ghost Story” and “Ain’t Them Bodies Saints.”
“The Old Man & the Gun” is set to debut at the upcoming Toronto International Film Festival before hitting theaters later on September 28.
