If you've kept up with us since we dropped our intial Cannes Film Festival piece back in February, a lot has changed and the field is becoming narrower and more clear in terms of what films and filmmakers are headed to the south of France. It requires a bit of moving puzzle pieces, and putting together bits and bobs of information, but the writing on the wall is beginning to appear, and today, the one moving the pen is The Hollywood Reporter. The trade has likely made a few phone calls of their own and been watching the landscape and today they reveal that "On The Road" and "Cosmopolis" — two movies already widely expected to hit the fest — are pretty much locks, while The Weinstein Company's "Cogan's Trade" (aka "Killing Me Softly") is "expected to be on hand." So what else can we expect?
"Rust And Bone" – Jacques Audiard: With a May 17th release date in France now penciled in — one day after the official festival opening on May 16th — it's pretty much a dead certainty to roll out at the fest at the same time it hits theaters in the country. The only slight possibility of it skipping the fest is if the movie doesn't measure up for some reason (which may be why it was pulled from its previously scheduled date of October 24th).
"Like Somone In Love" – Abbas Kiarostami: Just a couple of days ago we got the first trailer for the latest from the Iranian filmmaker, perhaps the best indication the movie is pretty close to being finished. He's a longtime fave of the fest and recently scored with "Certified Copy," so it's looking pretty good.
"The Angel's Share" – Ken Loach: The first images for this one landed on the same day we posted our first look at the contenders for Cannes, and with a June 1st date already set for its U.K. release, there's no doubt it will be ready in time to make the trip to Cannes.
"Laurence Anyways" – Xavier Dolan: Another movie headed to theaters this spring, the latest from the Quebecois filmmaking sensation, is set for a May release in his native land with a beautiful trailer and poster already debuting for the movie. He's probably already booked a flight.
"Goltzius And The Pelican Company" – Peter Greenaway: Just over a month ago, it was revealed that the cranky auteur was in the process of finishing his latest effort, starring F. Murray Abraham, in time for Cannes. He's the kind of revered arthouse name they like having around, so we'd bet on it unless an exceptionally strong field sidelines him to another fest.
"Lawless" – John Hillcoat: This highly anticipated movie has already been mooted for a Venice premiere in advance of its August 31st release, so we doubt we'll see it here, but if anything, Harvey is unpredictable and maybe he'll change the game and bring it here first. The recent movement on the title change for the movie on The Weinstein Company site certainly indicates that something is up.
Something from Terrence Malick: Depending on who you ask it's either his untitled romance with Ben Affleck, Javier Bardem, Barry Pepper, Rachel Weisz, Olga Kurylenko, Rachel McAdams, Amanda Peet, Micheal Sheen and Jessica Chastain or "The Voyage Of Time." Or maybe nothing at all (dude has been busy filming on his probably not called "Lawless" anymore movie).
Other movies still in the mix that we talked about over here: Leos Carax's "Holly Motors"; a double whammy of Isabelle Huppert in "Amour" from Michael Haneke and "In Another Country" from Hong Sang-Soo; and though THR mentions Laurent Cantent's "Foxfire," the producers said in January that the movie is aiming for a TIFF premiere.
So far, only Wes Anderson's "Moonrise Kingdom" and uh, "Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted" are confirmed (both playing out of competition). The full lineup lands on April 19th. The Cannes Film Festival runs from May 16-27.
