Is the journey more important than the destination? Over two decades of manga, fans have been enthralled by the adventures of Monkey D. Luffy in “One Piece” — this young pirate sets out on a larger-than-life quest and finds a crew of misfits along the way. The manga became the source material for an anime series that spans over 1000 episodes and counting. All of that has led to Netflix’s live-action adaptation, which promises to bring some of anime’s most popular characters and settings to life.

Portraying the well-known crew is no easy task yet the series assembled a talented cast. Iñaki Godoy stars as Luffy, having previously led “The Imperfects.” The Netflix series’ sci-fi, action, and adventure genres make for a perfect segway into this distinctive franchise. Roronoa Zoro, the team’s swordsman, is played by Mackenyu. The actor comes from a legendary acting family, with the late Sonny Chiba his father. Before “One Piece,” Mackenyu starred in “Fullmetal Alchemist: Final Chapter – The Avenger Scar” and “Fullmetal Alchemist: Final Chapter – The Last Transmutation.”
This version of “One Piece” comes from creators Steven Maeda and Matt Owens. The pair gave fans a glimpse into what to expect with a behind-the-scenes tour in mid-2022. Owens has a background in genre projects, including the Netflix and Marvel collaboration “Luke Cage.”
