While we wait for the FX adaptation of “Y: The Last Man” to maybe, finally see the light of day, there’s a new film coming out soon that takes a similar premise, and asks us how far we’d be willing to go to protect those we love. The first trailer for “Only” was released and it stars Leslie Odom Jr. and Freida Pinto.
In the trailer, Odom Jr. and Pinto star as Will and Eva, a couple living in a world where a comet releases a deadly virus threatening to destroy half of the global population: all female life, to be precise. This forces Will and Eva into hiding from the illness, just as bounty hunters pop up all over the place hunting any women left alive for the government, until they decide to fight back.
It’s an intriguing premise that takes a similar yet opposite approach to “Y: The Last Man,” combined with a survival story where tension builds as the couple sees the world be torn apart around them. It certainly has an interesting cast, with Odom Jr. having already made a career acting on TV before winning a Tony for his performance in “Hamilton” and acting in “Murder on the Orient Express” and “Harriet,” but this is his first sci-fi role, whereas Pinto has mostly acted in genre films such as “Rise of the Planet of the Apes” and “Immortals.”
“Only” premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival last year. Our own Lena Wilson wrote that “This is an idea with so much potential. It’s the kind of thing Margaret Atwood has staked an entire literary legacy on.” Time will tell if “Only” has the same impact as either Atwood’s novels, or Brian K. Vaughan’s comic book series.
“Only” will be released on theaters and on-demand March 6. Watch the trailer below:
