Original 'Pirates' Scribe Says Pirates 4' Rumors Are Bunk

Ok, last week there were rumors: Tim Burton to direct ‘Pirates 4,’ Johnny Depp to early crazy millions of dollars and Sacha Baron Cohen to co-star, right?

Well, writer Terry Rossio, who had a hand in writing all three of the previous franchise installments said the rumors are just that.

“For the record, none of the recent Pirates 4 rumors have any truth, including the so-called record 50 million dollar payday for Depp,” Rossio said on a message board Wordplay (via Cinemablend)

As for the so-called details and storylines? He scoffs those off too. “[It’s] some pretty funny stuff, though. Sacha Cohen? Tim Burton? Studios are way too protective of their franchises for that sort of thing.”

Oh, really? They did trust Depp with the lead role before it was proved he could carry a mainstream film and the studio was apparently pretty worried about what he was doing with his performance initially (too fey, too drunk and woozy), but who knows. Who cares really actually, we’d love to see Depp get back to taking on interesting roles already. These McFranchises are dull and uninspired and his kids should be sated by now.
