At a time when it seems when shows with the most niche of cult followings have a good a shot at survival in an increasingly competitive landscape, a series sometimes needs at least a hint of crossover appeal in order to survive. And for all its acclaim and dedicated fans, “Orphan Black” — which has held strong for four seasons so far — is going to have one last victory lap before wrapping up.
Today, the show’s team has announced that “Orphan Black” will conclude after a fifth and final season. And they are promising that it will go out with a bang. “We are excited to deliver an epic conclusion to the tale of Sarah and her clone sisters,” co-creators John Fawcett and Graeme Manson said in a statement. “The past four seasons have been a phenomenal adventure and we are eternally grateful to our loyal fans who have loved the twists and thrills of our weird little show. We are thankful to our partners at Temple Street, and to BBC America and Space for their support and giving us the opportunity to end on a high.”
So, start your speculation machines now. The season four finale airs tonight, and while this news may be a bummer for fans, if anything it has launched the career of Tatiana Maslany, who has already been shortlisted for a couple of Hollywood blockbusters, and no doubt will have a bright future ahead once the show wraps up.
