The L.A. Times sources say that damages that Warner Bros. will probably have to pay 20th Century Fox over the “Watchmen” copyright case, its expensive legal proceedings and imminent settlement, could potentially total “tens of millions of dollars.”
And recent court documents show that WB is pursuing [“Watchmen” producer Larry] Gordon “for all damages Warner Bros. suffers as a result of Fox’s claims” (Gordon has been at the epicenter of this case for some time).
The Times says, Gordon “his lawyers and their insurers, who could be on the hook for substantially more money.”
One of the possible settlement terms is Fox receiving “8.5% of ‘Watchmen’s’ gross receipts,” and for perspective, Zack Snyder’s “300,” grossed more than $456 million in worldwide ticket sales ( that’s close to $39 million and that total’s against the $130-million budget for the film; not including all marketing and ancillary costs).
Here’s a telling graph, obviously Gordon has already admitted to a “mistake” on his lawyer’s part in a recent letter to the L.A. Courts and this could cost him.
“It is unclear whether Gordon has initiated an insurance claim against the law firm that negotiated his ‘Watchmen’ deal with Warner Bros., but Gordon has said in a letter that the same lawyers may have made “a unilateral mistake” as part of an earlier deal involving the film’s rights.”
Gordon’s lawyer refused to comment. Dude could potentially be fuuuucked. Another hearing between Fox and WB’s lawyers has been scheduled for today.
