In this age of IP-dominated cinema, there are plenty of announcements that seem obvious on the surface. Another superhero film being made? Sure, that makes sense. A sequel to a long-dormant franchise with its original star attached? “Top Gun: Maverick” has shown that can potentially make a lot of money. But sometimes, an announcement gets made that leaves even the most cynical film fan scratching their head. Are they really going to make a live-action “Pac-Man” film? Why, yes, in fact, they are!
According to THR, Bandai Namco Entertainment and Wayfarer Studios are teaming up to bring the long-running videogame franchise, “Pac-Man,” to the big screen. What does a live-action version of “Pac-Man” look like? Will it actually feature the title character in CGI glory battling multi-colored ghosts and eating pellets of energy? Who knows? But just imagining that makes you question why anyone would think this is a good idea.
Apparently, the film is based on an idea from Chuck Williams, a producer who worked on the massive hit, “Sonic the Hedgehog,” also based on an existing video game property. But again, it must be stressed that at least “Sonic the Hedgehog” has a lead character with personality and a franchise with some semblance of a story. “Pac-Man?” Notsomuch.
This isn’t the first time “Pac-Man” has been adapted for TV or film. There once was a “Pac-Man” saturday morning cartoon that attempted to bring the story of Pac-Man, his wife Ms. Pac Man, their kid Pac-Baby, and their pets, Chomp Chomp and Sour Puss to life. That series took place in Pac-Land, obviously.
A release date or anything else about the film is unknown at this time.
