Golden Globe-nominated actress and famous filmmaker Penny Marshall has passed away at the age of 75, according to reports.
Marshall is probably best known for her work on the iconic ‘70s/’80s sitcom “Laverne & Shirley.” The sitcom, a spin-off of the classic “Happy Days,” featured Marshall as one half of the titular comedic duo and would go on to be nominated for six Golden Globes and one Primetime Emmy. The actress, herself, earned three of those Globes noms.
As an actress, Marshall also starred in dozens of other TV series, including “The Odd Couple,” “The Mary Tyler Moore Show,” “The Bob Newhart Show,” and the aforementioned “Happy Days.”
Many film and TV fans probably recognize Marshall for her directorial work, having helmed some of the most iconic comedies of the last 40 years. The director is responsible for such films as “Big,” “A League of Their Own,” and “Awakenings,” as well as films “The Preacher’s Wife” and “Riding in Cars with Boys.” On the TV side of things, Marshall directed episodes of “United States of Tara,” among others.
Penny Marshall’s sibling, the late Garry Marshall, was also an icon in the realm of TV, having produced an absolutely classic lineup of TV series.
Deadline reports that Marshall was in post-production on a film that would feature one of her long-time friends, Dennis Rodman. No word on what will happen to the rest of the production.
Marshall was diagnosed with lung and brain cancer in 2009. However, the reports say the 75-year-old filmmaker died in her home last night due to complications from diabetes.
