Emmy-Nominated Phoebe Waller-Bridge Steps Down As Writer For 'Killing Eve' Season 2

One of the big surprises of 2018, so far, is the success of the BBC America series “Killing Eve.” The show, which stars Jodie Comer and the Emmy-nominated Sandra Oh, has become one of the buzziest series on TV. With a fanbase that is ever-growing and Emmy nominations in tow, all eyes on what the cast and crew can do for the upcoming season 2, which is in production now.

While we don’t know any plot details for the upcoming season, we do know that there are going to be some changes behind-the-scenes, according to Variety. Writer/creator Phoebe Waller-Bridge, who was nominated for an Emmy this year for Outstanding Writing, is not returning to the BBC America drama. Waller-Bridge receives a lot of credit for the popularity of the series, along with star Sandra Oh. However, with her other series, “Fleabag,” also in production, Waller-Bridge just had to make a choice, and she chose to step down as lead writer for the upcoming season.

Writer Emerald Fennell, who was handpicked by Waller-Bridge, has been chosen to become the lead writer on the series. She is probably best known as an actress, specifically in the series “Call the Midwife,” but she is transitioning into a writing career. Waller-Bridge also made sure to bring aboard two female directors to the upcoming season, Lisa Bruhlmann and Francesca Gregorini, who have worked on “Blue My Mind” and “Electric Dreams,” respectively.

“With ‘Killing Eve,’ Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Sandra Oh, Jodie Comer and the enormously talented team created something that cut through the noise with the same elegant efficiency as a poisoned hairpin,” said Sarah Barnett, president of BBC America. “We are filled with excitement and anticipation for the surprises in store as we move into Season 2.”

No word yet on a release date for season 2, however, with all the attention being brought its way, “Killing Eve,” is poised to be even bigger when the next batch of episodes hit.
