It’s been eight long years since Pierce Brosnan was last James Bond — in one of the weakest additions to the franchise “Die Another Day” — and he’s now moved on from Bond to “Bonded”. The new film will find him starring alongside his son Sean in which the pair will both play cops in a rather grim sounding drama.
Mohit Ramchandani’s follow up to “Devils Creek” will tell the tale “of a Mexican teenager called Jesus who, after the death of his mother, is sold by his father and smuggled into America, where he’s forced to work as a bonded slave labourer in a Los Angeles sweatshop. While trapped there, he befriends a young woman named Elena, but when she is taken by a sex trafficker, Jesus escapes and attempts to rescue her.”
Brosnan Jr. was presumably cast on the back of his friendship with the director; he and Ramchandani grew up together in London. And while Sean may still be an unknown quantity to most, fans of the acclaimed “Generation Kill” may recognise him as Cpl. Daniel Redman. Pierce probably won’t have taken too much convincing to star alongside his son, the deal probably sweetened by an executive producer credit through his Irish DreamTime company.
Brosnan reminded us all of his existence when belting out Abba’s “SOS” in “Mamma Mia” (hands up who didn’t laugh) and since then has notably starred as the dad of R-Patz in “Remember Me,” as a centaur in “Percy Jackson” and as a former Prime Minister in “The Ghost Writer.” We’ve got to admit we’re kind of fond of Brosnan and it will be interesting to see him star alongside his son. The production has still to find it’s Jesus though, with filming set to begin in September. — Joe Cunningham
