“They tried to get rid of me. But from ocean to ocean, they’re gonna have to deal with me.” – Pitbull
As was covered in our review of “Aquaman,” the film throws everything it can think of in its two-and-a-half hour run-time. No matter if it’s overbearing, obnoxious, stupid, or confounding, there’s just so much…stuff…in “Aquaman,” that you’ll probably spend the entire length of the film trying to find time to blink. But hey, it’s occasionally fun and entertaining. That being said, it makes complete sense that the soundtrack for this hodgepodge of genres, tones, and styles would feature a Pitbull song, titled “Ocean to Ocean,” featuring a heavy dose of Toto’s hit ‘80s song “Africa.”

That’s right, Pitbull, aka Mr. Worldwide aka Mr. 305, decides to bring his own brand of music to one of the most beloved songs of the ‘80s, and as you might expect, it’s loud, brash, unintentionally hilarious, and tacky. In other words, it’s totally and unquestionably perfect for “Aquaman.”
And much like “Aquaman” (which mixes horribleness with genuine moments of joy), while you suffer through the unintelligible verses of Pitbull’s rapping, seemingly ready to give up on the song altogether, the hook comes in and reminds you that “Africa” is a fun, catchy song and you get sucked back in. But then, you’re hit with more Pitbull, and the twisted cycle continues for the song’s run-time.
I’m no Pitbull connoisseur but it’s hard to tell whether he’s attempting to create poetry here or if he had a spare five minutes and blurted out the first things on his mind while “Africa” played in the background. It’s hard to tell with lyrics like “From ocean to ocean, sea to sea, I’m something that you gotta see.” And from what I can tell, the second verse just talks about how he loves to travel and has a lot of money…because “Aquaman?” Who knows?
Ultimately, the reason we’re sharing this song isn’t solely because it’s offensive to “Aquaman,” Jason Momoa, Toto, all music, and anyone with ears, it’s because I had to listen to it and I want more people to endure what I had to.
Sorry, folks.
Here’s the entire song, followed by the original video for “Africa” (hopefully, serving as a palatte cleanser):
