'Playmobil: The Movie' Trailer: Nope, This Is Definitely Not A Cynical Cash Grab Influenced By 'LEGO' Success

When “The LEGO Movie” became a massive hit, spawning two spin-offs and an upcoming sequel, it was only a matter of time before studios went to the literal toy box and began figuring out which brands could be the next big thing. That’s really the only reason we can think of to explain the existence of the upcoming “Playmobil: The Movie.”

In the new teaser trailer for the live-action/animated hybrid film, a young woman and her little brother become trapped in the Playmobil world through some wacky hijinks. Now, the girl must venture through all sorts of Playmobil play sets to find her brother. Think “LEGO Movie” but instead of rectangle bricks, this world is more…rounded.

It’s hard to look at “Playmobil: The Movie” without a cynical eye. Clearly, this is a cash grab playing off the success of another children’s toy massive hit animated movie. But is there enough of a story, or any other compelling reason, to justify this film’s existence? That’s the question, and we’ll find out the answer at the tail-end of summer 2019.

The cast for the film includes Anya Taylor-Joy, Jim Gaffigan, Gabriel Bateman, Adam Lambert, Kenan Thompson, Meghan Trainor and Daniel Radcliffe.

“Playmobil: The Movie” hits theaters on August 16, 2019.
