Hulu’s “Prey” was one of the biggest surprises of 2022. The film was not only a solid “Predator” spinoff, but it was actually one of the better films of that year. That means there is a lot of anticipation regarding the next film in the franchise, “Predator: Badlands.” But even with all the anticipation, there’s one thing no one predicted—the Predator is the protagonist.

According to a new interview from Empire, “Prey” filmmaker Dan Trachtenberg talked about his next film in the franchise, “Predator: Badlands.” Specifically, he opened up about how the film would feature the Predator “front and center.” That would definitely be a first for the franchise.
“The creature is front and center, leading the charge,” Trachtenberg said. “He’s still badass, but there’s something there that touches you emotionally, too. Creating a character you connect with, but are also super-intimidated by, has been challenging. But exciting.”
According to the filmmaker, the idea for the Predator to be the protagonist came about because he wanted to “find another essential piece of cinema that does what ‘Prey’ did spiritually — pushing the franchise’s boundaries, letting us root for a hero we rarely get to root for — but in a different way. And that transformed into this big idea of rooting for the Predator.”
‘Badlands’ is set to star Elle Fanning. Many assumed she would be the main character of the film, but apparently not. That said, one surprising thing about Fanning’s inclusion in the film is that she will play more than one role in the film.
It really does seem as if Trachtenberg is pushing the limits of the franchise, yet again, with ‘Badlands.’ Now, hopefully, he can make a film that is just as good as, if not better than, “Prey.” ‘Badlands’ doesn’t yet have a release date.
