'Rez Ball' Trailer: A High School Basketball Team Overcomes Adversity In Sydney Freeland's New Sports Drama

Two of the most popular series of the past couple of years to highlight indigenous people are “Reservation Dogs” and “Echo.” And for the upcoming film, “Rez Ball,” creative minds from both of those projects are coming together to deliver a heartwarming sports film. 

As seen in the trailer, “Rez Ball” tells the story of the Chuska Warriors, a high school basketball team that loses their star player. Now, with the help of a committed head coach and their indigenous heritage, the Warriors are trying to win the state championship.

The film stars Jessica Matten, Kauchani Bratt, Cody Lightning, Dallas Goldtooth, Ernest David Tsosie, Kusem Goodwind, Zoey Reyes, Amber Midthunder, and Julia Jones. The film is co-written and directed by Sydney Freeland. The filmmaker is probably best known as the director of episodes of the aforementioned “Echo.” “Reservation Dogs” creator Sterlin Harjo is a co-writer, as well.

“Rez Ball” debuts on Netflix on September 27, after it plays at the Toronto Film Festival. You can watch the trailer below.
