Ridley Scott Says 'House Of Gucci' Getting An Extended Cut

At 83 years young, director Ridley Scott shows no signs of slowing down. He’s already released two 2021 studio feature films within months of each other (“The Last Duel” and “House Of Gucci,” and he’s already prepping his next project at Apple Studios with “Kitbag.” That epic, a Napoleonic film, will see him reunite with “Gladiator” actor Joaquin Phoenix and “The Last Duel” star Jodie Comer as cameras are expected to begin rolling in early 2022.

People are all a buzz about his fashion crime flick “House of Gucci” starring folks such as Lady Gaga, Adam Driver, Jared Leto, and Al Pacino, as many have been either tickled or puzzled by its brazen choices. The drama, released this weekend domestically, focuses on the dramatic events leading up to the murder of Maurizio Gucci and how his wife Patrizia Reggiani got entangled in the family business along with her attempted coup of the Italian fashion house.

While promoting “House of Gucci,” the veteran filmmaker revealed to the ReelBlend podcast that he’s planning on releasing a “long” or extended cut of the film at some point, alluding to home release. Note that Scott doesn’t exactly say when that is coming and if it’ll be part of the film’s first round of physical copies.

“No, not really, what tends to be the film,” Scott said of his theatrical cuts vs. directors cuts.

“I’m pretty responsible; I’m not going to say it needs to be four hours or more. It’s already two and [a half hours] plus…Things do play better at home because you can pause it, get a beer, and come back…I will probably…It won’t be a director’s cut; it will be a long cut,” Scott explained when asked about releasing a director’s cut of “Gucci” and “The Last Duel.”

I think we can assume this also applies to “The Last Duel” too as most Scott films get the extended cut treatment and are known for tinkering post-theatrical run for home releases; however, it should be noted he appears to be talking about ‘Gucci,’ specifically and not ‘Duel.’ The most famous of Scott’s director’s cuts are “Blade Runner: The Final Cut,” a lengthy director’s cut of “Kingdom of Heaven,” and an alternate version of “Alien” featuring different scenes, such as a cocooned Dallas throwing a wrench in the established life cycle of the xenomorph (humans originally were turned into eggs).

It’ll be interesting to see what scenes were trimmed or removed entirely for the theatrical version of “Gucci.”
