Got a Tip?

‘The Road’ & Yet Another Werner Herzog Film Added To TIFF ’09 Line-Up

Man, if one was remotely lukewarm about the Toronto International Film Festival before (which is a bit nuts), you’re surely not now. 19 new films have been added to the line-up and man, we’re getting even more excited to attend the festival that we probably won’t be attending (ahh, good times…).

Here’s the highlights for us:
– First and foremost, John Hillcoat’s post-apocalyptic drama, “The Road,” starring Viggo Mortensen in Cormac McCarthy’s bleak, but beloved novel about a father and son traveling a decrepit and dangerous wasteland to survive. Nick Cave and Warren Ellis are creating the score which we can’t wait for.
– Werner Herzog’s “My Son, My Son What Have Ye Done” which is only being touted as a Canadian premiere. Is it premiering at Venice and we missed that? Or is this tipping it’s hat to the fact that the world (or U.S.) premiere will be at Telluride? Either way it has a great cast: Chloe Sevigny , Michael Shannon, Udo Kier and Willem Dafoe. It’s also produced by David Lynch.
– Miguel Arteta’s “Youth In Revolt” starring Michael Cera and an excellent supporting cast.
– The George Clooney-starring “Men Who Stare At Goats” with Ewan McGregor as directed by Grant Heslov.

Other notable additions include:
The swords and sandals Cannes picture, “Agora” starring Rachel Weisz as directed by Alejandro Amenabar who we like, but the picture mostly bored us to tears at the Croisette.
– Fashion designer Tom Ford’s directorial debut, “A Single Man,” starring Julianne Moore and Colin Firth.
– The Cannes pic, “Coco Chanel & Igor Stravinsky” directed by Jan Kounen.
– Giuseppe Tornatore’s “Baaria,” which is premiering in Venice.
– Don Roos’ — he of the decent, but not quite stellar 1998 indie, “The Opposite of Sex” — new film, “Love and Other Impossible Pursuits” starring Natalie Portman.
– Demi Moore vehicle “The Joneses.”
– “Mother and Child,” a family drama directed by Rodrigo Garcia starring Annette Bening, Naomi Watts and Kerry Washington.
– Spanish director Carlos Saura’s “I, Don Giovanni” (he already has four films on the Criterion Collection with 1967’s “Peppermint Frappé” rumored to come out next).

TIFF runs September 10-19 and now we’ll probably cry if we don’t go. [ScreenDaily/Variety]
