Got a Tip?

‘The Romanoffs’ Trailer: One Royal Family, Eight Separate Stories, Dozens Of Great Actors

Amazon has clearly invested a lot of money into creator Matthew Weiner’s upcoming anthology series “The Romanoffs.” The new show, which will premiere next month, follows the stories of a handful of people around the world that all claim to be descendants of the titular Russian royal family. However, the premise is secondary once you see the incredible cast that has been put together.

In the official trailer for the series, it’s a whos-who of prominent film and TV stars. Weiner’s follow-up to his acclaimed, award-winning series “Mad Men” has attracted the likes of Isabelle Huppert, Diane Lane, Aaron Eckhart, Marthe Keller, as well as “Mad Men” alums Christina Hendricks and John Slattery. And those are just about a quarter of the high-profile actors appearing over the course of the eight episodes.

The trick to getting all these names for the show is how Weiner and Amazon structured the series. Each episode of “The Romanoffs” will feature a new cast, new setting, and new storyline, but will retain the logline of someone dealing with the fact that they may or may not be a member of this royal family. And instead of releasing all the episodes at once, as the studio has done in the past, Amazon will launch the series with two episodes, with subsequent entries premiering each week.

“The Romanoffs” is entirely written and directed by Weiner and will premiere on Amazon Prime Video on October 12.

Here’s the synopsis for the anthology series:

The Romanoffs is created, written, directed and executive produced by nine-time Emmy award winner Matthew Weiner (Mad Men), featuring eight separate stories about people who believe themselves to be descendants of the Russian royal family. Set in seven countries around the globe, The Romanoffs was shot on location in three continents collaborating with local productions and creative talent across Europe, the Americas, and the Far East. Each story takes place in a new location with a new cast. The first episode, “The Violet Hour’ stars Marthe Keller, Aaron Eckhart, Ines Melab and Louise Bourgoin and the second story, “The Royal We,” starring Corey Stoll, Kerry Bishe, Janet Montgomery and Noah Wyle.
