The “Birds of Prey” got a new member.
According to The Wrap, actress Rosie Perez has signed on to play Renee Montoya in the upcoming DC female-led film. “Birds of Prey” tells the story of a group of female superheroes that combine forces to fight crime and do other superhero-y things.

Montoya probably won’t be part of the main group of women, which is said to include Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, Mary Elizabeth Winstead as Huntress, Jurnee Smollett-Bell as Black Canary, and yet-to-be-cast Cassandra Cain aka Batgirl. In the comics, Renee Montoya is mainly known as one of the non-corrupt Gotham City police officers, who helps superheroes from time to time. However, the character does have a superhero alter ego that she donned in some comics, when she took over as The Question, but its unlikely she’ll do that in “Birds of Prey.”
Perez was one of the biggest actresses in the ‘80s and ‘90s, starring in films like “Do the Right Thing” and “White Men Can’t Jump.” She even scored an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress for her work in the 1993 film, “Fearless.” Most recently, Perez was seen as one of the stars of the series “Rise,” as well as on shows like “Elena of Avalor,” “Search Party,” and “The View” (which she co-hosted for a couple years).
“Birds of Prey” is set to begin production in January with director Cathy Yan stepping in to helm. She’ll make her debut in the action blockbuster realm with the film. “Bumblebee” writer Christina Hodson is responsible for the script.
“Birds of Prey” is set to hit theaters on February 7, 2020.
