You would think that with the early estimates saying that “Deadpool 2” could gross more than $150 million during its opening weekend, that the actor (and creative force) behind it all would be clearly looking ahead at the next sequel. However, in the case of Ryan Reynolds, he has some serious doubts about the future of the “Deadpool” franchise.
Speaking to EW, Reynolds had a lot to say about a potential third film:
“I don’t know that there would be a ‘Deadpool 3.’ I really don’t. I feel like the character, in order for him to function properly within his own universe, you need to take everything away from him. I don’t think that you can keep doing that. I do see him as being a part of ‘X-Force,’ obviously. I would love to see him in a team-up sort of thing, like a mano a mano or a great female character from the ‘X-Men’ universe. I just think if you’re going to do another Deadpool solo film, you’ve got to really, like, get that budget down to nothing and just swing for the fences, and break all kinds of weird barriers, and do stuff that no one else can do.”
This very well could be the first example of a person responsible for a huge franchise actively talking about ending the franchise after only two films. This has to make studio executives want to pull out their hair. But regardless of the financial implications, perhaps the actor is actually being smart about a character he, clearly, so dearly loves.
After “Deadpool 2,” the character will next be seen in the team-up film “X-Force.” That is if the Disney/Fox merger is approved and the new studio deems it a good idea. However, for the sake of argument, let’s say that “X-Force” is a done deal. At that point, audiences will have seen Deadpool in three films, in a relatively short amount of time. Much like candy, perhaps too much Deadpool can turn people’s stomach. You have to admit that eventually, the fourth-wall-breaking, pop-culture-joke-slinging superhero could be a tad bit…annoying.
So, in the interview with EW, Reynolds talks (jokes) about Deadpool’s ability, as a character, to be anything. And that potentially, the third “Deadpool” film could actually be a Sundance film.
When questioned on if that means we can look for “Deadpool 3” being a new “Call Me By Your Name,” Reynolds responds, “I wouldn’t suggest for a second that our writing would be at that level, but I do think that we could go to a lot of very unexpected places. I do think that we could go to a lot of very unexpected places. I’ll just put it that way, but I would love that.”
