Ryan Reynolds Re-Teaming With ‘Free Guy’ Director Shawn Levy For Time Travel Film

It seems that even if projects and being delayed or shut down in Hollywood due to the current pandemic, at least Ryan Reynolds is still announcing projects left and right. In addition to his recently announced adaptation of “Dragon’s Lair” for Netflix, Reynolds is going to re-team with “Free Guy” director Shawn Levy (who is also busy enough with the upcoming fourth season of “Stranger Things”) for a new film involving time travel.

The news comes from The Hollywood Reporter’s Heat Vision, which stated that Reynolds will star in the long-gestating film that was once titled “Our Name Is Adam” but will undergo a title change. The story follows “a man who must travel back in time to get help from his 13-year-old self. Together, they encounter their late father, who is now the same age as Reynolds.”

The film has been in and out of development at Skydance and Paramount for years, with Tom Cruise being briefly attached at one moment before the actor moved on to make other sci-fi movies like “Oblivion” and “Edge of Tomorrow.” The project began its life with an original spec script written by T.S. Nowlin and it even made the 2012 Black List of the best unproduced screenplays in Hollywood. The current iteration of the story is being re-written by Jonathan Tropper, who also wrote Levy’s dramedy “This is Where I Leave You.”

The untitled Levy and Reynolds project is set to film sometime towards the end of the year, assuming it can be done safely given the current pandemic. Though Shawn Levy’s directorial endeavors are all over the place (for every “Night at the Museum” there’s been a “The Internship”), could make this an interesting and perhaps even emotionally effective film. As for Reynolds, he’s already proven he can do more than playing a wisecracker, as seen in “Definitely, Maybe.”
