Got a Tip?

Ryan Reynolds & Simon Kinberg Are Putting Together An ‘Ocean’s’ Style Heist Film For Netflix, Shawn Levy To Direct

George Clooney‘s hints about a possible “Ocean’s 14” movie wasn’t the only heist film to make the news yesterday. Deadline reports that Netflix won out over seven other studio bidders for a Ryan Reynolds global heist comedy. The pitch doesn’t have a name yet, but “The Lost City” scribe Dana Fox will pen the script, with Simon Kinberg producing.

Fox and Kinberg pitched their idea to Reynold and his Maximum Effort banner first: a heist comedy set on the international stage with an ensemble cast. So, yup, that sounds like an “Ocean’s” movie. But it remains to be seen who will join Reynolds in the cast. Netflix will pay Fox and Kinberg seven-figures each for the movie, with Kinberg and Audrey Chon producing through Genre Films. Fox will also have a producing credit.

Having a Ryan Reynolds pic land with Netflix should come as no surprise given the actor’s history with the streamer. Previous Reynolds flicks for Netflix include “The Adam Project,” “Red Notice” (which, coincidentally enough, is an international heist-y movie), and “Six Underground.” But this is also another collaboration between Reynolds and Kinberg after the “Deadpool” movies, which they produce together. So, given all of that, it’s obvious what the vibe of this new Reynolds project will be. If “Deadpool” or “Red Notice” isn’t your thing, maybe steer clear of this one.

As for Reynold’s other upcoming movie, the action comedy Calamity Hustle” with Channing Tatum, it’s still on the market getting shopped around. But considering Netflix paid big for this heist movie (and Amazon/MGM for “Best Of Enemies“), it’s safe to say the Hollywood market is back in full swing post-guild strikes.

UPDATE: It appears another Ryan Reynolds regular will board the actor’s upcoming heist comedy. Deadline reports that “Deadpool 3” director Shawn Levy is set to direct the upcoming Netflix feature. If this film ends up being Levy’s next film, then that will be four movies directing Reynolds in a row. It’ll also be yet another Netflix project for Levy after “All The Light We Cannot See.” So, further warning here: if Levy’s films aren’t your thing either, this may not be the movie for you.
