The world premiere of “Promising Young Woman” at Sundance in 2020 instantly made Emerald Fennell a female director to keep an eye on. And while the COVID-19 pandemic may have delayed its arrival to audiences a bit, the film still racked up the accolades, winning Best Original Screenplay at the 93rd Academy Awards. Well, that’s “Saltburn,” a college drama that skewers class and privilege. Barry Keoghan stars as Oliver, a misfit at Oxford University drawn into the world of Jacob Elordi, a charming rich kid who lives at Saltburn, his family estate, where Olvier’s live changes forever.
Here’s an official synopsis for “Saltburn,” courtesy of Amazon Studios and MGM:
Academy Award winning filmmaker Emerald Fennell (Promising Young Woman) brings us a beautifully wicked tale of privilege and desire. Struggling to find his place at Oxford University, student Oliver Quick (Barry Keoghan) finds himself drawn into the world of the charming and aristocratic Felix Catton (Jacob Elordi), who invites him to Saltburn, his eccentric family’s sprawling estate, for a summer never to be forgotten.
Along with Keoghan and Elordi, “Saltburn” also stars Rosamund Pike, Richard E. Grant, and Alison Oliver. Archie Madekwe, Carey Mulligan, Paul Rhys, and Lolly Adefope round out the main cast.
Fennell writes and directs “Saltburn,” as she did on “Promising Young Woman.” She also leads producers with Josey McNamara, Margot Robbie, and Tom Ackerley.
“Saltburn” had its world premiere at the Telluride Film Festival last month, winning over critics much as “Promising Young Woman” did at Sundance in 2020 (read The Playlist’s review here). Is this film another winner from Emerald Fennell? Find out when “Saltburn” hits theaters everywhere on November 22. The movie also premieres in select theaters five days earlier on November 17.
