British actress Samantha Morton has had a pretty great career in the realm of film and TV. In fact, she’s actually been nominated for two Oscars, with her first one coming in 2000 thanks to her role in Woody Allen’s “Sweet and Lowdown.” And it’s that film that Morton credits for kickstarting her career and is why she has very specific thoughts on the controversial filmmaker.
Speaking to Vanity Fair, Morton discussed her feelings about working with Woody Allen. And unlike actors such as Timothée Chalamet and Rebecca Hall (to name a couple), Morton doesn’t regret her time with the legendary filmmaker. In fact, though she has been a victim of sexual abuse herself, she is grateful for her time with Allen.
“I don’t have any regrets,” the actress said. “I’m terribly sorry for the situation that is publicly known. It’s heartbreaking. I was sexually abused. Some of the people that hurt me can’t be brought to justice for complications of time. I have full sympathy for anybody who says that happens to them, and it needs to be taken incredibly seriously.”
Woody Allen, of course, has seen his career hit a low point recently when his previous allegations of sexual assault against a minor resurfaced due to the #MeToo movement. Subsequent comments made by the director didn’t help his image, and he was eventually dropped by Amazon and is now involved in a $68 million lawsuit. Needless to say, there are mixed feelings regarding Allen’s current standing in Hollywood.
She continued, “But if I look back at the situation that I was in, where I was working for a director who was kind, funny, and wonderful to work with, it changed my life. And I’m forever grateful for that…I can’t now go back [and change anything].”
Morton has been featured in a ton of high-profile films and TV series over the last two decades, since working on “Sweet and Lowdown.” Most recently, she’s had a starring role in the most recent season of AMC’s “The Walking Dead.”
