'Saturday Night' First Look: Jason Reitman Recreates The First 'SNL' With His Upcoming Film

There’s a lot of excitement and buzz surrounding the release of Jason Reitman’sSaturday Night.” Not only do people have high hopes because of the filmmaker’s track record, but it’s October 11 release date actually puts it squarely in the middle of awards season, a calculated move by the studio, no doubt.

Now, thanks to the folks at Vanity Fair, we have our first look at the upcoming movie, “Saturday Night.” The film is said to take place on the night of “Saturday Night Live’s” debut show 50 years ago. “Saturday Night” shows all the behind the scenes drama that went into the creation of the legendary show.

Typically, when you see a film that aims to tell the truth behind a historic event, the filmmaker pulls from a book about the subject. However, in this case, Reitman, along with his frequent collaborator, Gil Kenan, did their own extensive research to help craft the film.

“We interviewed everyone we could find that was alive from opening night,” Reitman explained. “Every living cast member, every living writer, people from the art department, costumes, hair and makeup, NBC pages, members of Billy Preston’s band—I mean, anyone we could find.”

We’ll have to wait and see how well the research pays off. Obviously, there will be some artistic license that changes some things to make it a better film, but it really does sound as if Reitman and Co. are doing their best to tell the real truth behind ‘SNL’ in its debut year.

The film stars Gabriel LaBelle, Dylan O’Brien, Cory Michael Smith, Rachel Sennott, Lamorne Morris, Nicholas Braun, Finn Wolfhard, Jon Batiste, Ella Hunt, Cooper Hoffman, Andrew Barth Feldman, Naomi McPherson, Willem Dafoe, J.K. Simmons, and Kaia Gerber.

“Saturday Night” debuts in theaters on October 11. You can see the first-look photos below:
