Over the course of its three-hour run-time, “Avengers: Endgame” had no shortage of big moments. From surprising deaths, epic fights, and numerous callbacks to the almost-two-dozen previous Marvel Cinematic Universe films, the superhero team-up still has fans talking months after its release. And one of the biggest topics of conversation is the *spoiler alert* death of Black Widow, played by Scarlett Johansson.
The debate surrounding Natasha’s death seems to revolve around the idea that maybe the character, one of the original six Avengers, deserved something more grand, and not just sacrificing her life on a remote planet. But according to an interview with THR, Johansson thinks the end of Widow’s story is exactly what it should have been.
“The finality of it was sad, but I was excited to die with honor,” she said. “It felt in-character that she would sacrifice herself, of course for humanity but actually for her friends, for the people she loves. It was bittersweet.”
But don’t fret, as with superhero films and the comic books they’re based on, death is merely a stumbling block and far from the end. And for Johansson’s character, she’ll not only return but will do so as the star of the upcoming “Black Widow,” coming in May 2020. Thanks to the prequel nature of the solo film, Johansson can return for one more go ‘round as the Avengers’ resident spy, and she can do so in the prime summer movie slot, which is normally given to one of the biggest films of the season. And according to the actress, that’s exactly where “Black Widow” should be.
“The movie packs a big punch. If that slot is reserved for movies that pack a big punch, then we’re in a good, good space,” said the actress.
“Black Widow” finds Johansson working with director Cate Shoreland and new MCU actors such as Florence Pugh, Rachel Weisz, O-T Fagbenle, and David Harbour. The film will arrive in theaters on May 5, 2020.
