If you ask most film fans, they’d probably say Nancy Meyers is the queen of the rom-com. Over the ‘90s and ‘00s, some of the most popular and well-reviewed romantic comedies were probably at least written, if not directed, by the filmmaker. Sadly, we haven’t had a new film from the writer-director since 2015’s “The Intern.” However, that’s about to change in a big, big way.

According to THR, Nancy Meyers is teaming up with Netflix for her new romantic comedy film. That’s good news, in and of itself. But when you hear the names of the cast members and see the budget she’s been reportedly given, it’s clear that Netflix believes wholeheartedly that a new rom-com from Meyers could be a massive win for the streaming service.
The report claims that Scarlett Johansson is set to lead the cast of Meyers’ next, untitled film. Johansson could be joined in the cast by Penelope Cruz, Owen Wilson, and Michael Fassbender, who are being eyed to round out the lead cast. The film is said to follow a writer/director who finds herself falling in love with a producer. The duo then go on to collaborate on a number of high-profile, successful projects before their relationship falls apart. Years later, they’re forced to work together again on a new project. You have to assume hijinks and romance ensue.
It’s being reported that Netflix is giving $130 million to finance the project, which would be an absolutely massive number for a modern rom-com. Typically, especially in recent years, rom-coms have starred less well-known actors and have fairly small budgets. However, at $130 million, we’re getting into blockbuster range.
As mentioned, it’s been nearly a decade since “The Intern,” which is the most recent film that Meyers has written and directed. Before then, she directed films such as “What Women Want,” “Something’s Gotta Give,” and “It’s Complicated.” Before she directed movies, Meyers was a screenwriter who scripted films such as the first two “Father of the Bride” films.
No release date has been given for the untitled film.
