Got a Tip?

Scene: “One Beer” From ‘The Wrestler’

This scene from Darren Aronofsky’s “The Wrestler” is pretty short, so it’s hard to get a lot of real emotion on it, but the context around it illustrates how this is really indicative of the films tender and comedic tones. Mickey Rourke’s character is really self-aware, charming and self-deprecating in his gentle wooing of Marisa Tomei’s character and that balance is definitely hinted at here. We generally don’t see movies twice anymore cause we generally don’t have time to spare anymore, but we’re going to make the time to see the film once more because we thought it was wonderfully modest, sparse and winning. Hopefully we’ll like it as much on a second viewing as we did when we saw it at the Toronto Film Festival earlier this year. Friends of ours just ran into Tomei at our local watering hole in Brooklyn. Interesting that she hangs out with the rest of the pleebs. The females in the flick are damn good too so here’s to hoping they get some award season recognition too, it seems that Tomei already has found some.

“The Wrestler” opens up in limited theaters on December 17th 2008.
