It’s unfair that some movies just slip through the cracks, and despite screening at both Venice and Toronto film festivals in 2015, Simon Stone‘s “The Daughter” — which we called “a quiet, immensely affecting triumph” — failed to earn much attention. Thankfully, Kino Lorber are stepping up to bring the Australian drama stateside, and hopefully it can find the audience it deserves.
Starring Odessa Young, Anna Torv, Miranda Otto, Paul Schneider, Ewen Leslie, Geoffrey Rush, and Sam Neill, the film follows a man who returns home to New South Wales after 15 years away, and reconnects with family and friends, only to find a hidden secret waiting to be unleashed. Here’s the official synopsis:
After a fifteen-year absence, Christian (Paul Schneider) returns home to rural New South Wales for the marriage of his father, Henry (Academy Award winner Geoffrey Rush), the wealthy owner of the local mill that’s been the economic bedrock of the community for generations. Christian gets reacquainted with his old friend Oliver (Ewen Leslie) and finds himself drawn to Oliver’s family, which includes wife Charlotte (Miranda Otto), daughter Hedvig (Odessa Young), and father-in-law Walter (Sam Neill). When Henry announces the imminent closure of the mill, it sends a quake through the community, particularly Oliver’s family, and the subsequent fissures release bitter secrets.
No firm release date yet for “The Daughter,” but keep an eye on your arthouse listings.
