Ok, so as you’ve heard, Mark Strong is in line to play Sinestro in Martin Campbell’s adaptation of D.C. Comics “Green Lantern.”
However, as we noted over the weekend, Strong’s schedule is, according to Campbell, tricky, so it’s not 100% locked in, but they’re trying to work it out.
And also aforementioned, we’ve heard — and so have many other sites — that Sinestro won’t be the villain in “Green Lantern” (that will be Peter Sarsgaard). His character is originally a mentor figure in the comics and that’s evidently the way he’ll start out in the movie.
Evidently his role will be more akin to Moriarty in “Sherlock Holmes” — he’s not the main villain, but he sets up the inevitable sequel.
In a recent interview with ComingSoon, Martin Campbell pretty much confirms his role in the film: a figure that eventually turns evil.
“I think it will stick closely to the origin story, but we all know Sinestro, for an example, is a character who goes over to the dark side, and of course, Carol, played by Blake Lively, in later versions becomes a bad guy as well. I think people will be able to see forward to the characters that in the comic went on to (become bad guys)… but people will be ahead of us on all that I think.”
Ok, “pretty much confirms” is a little heavy, but those are some pretty strong hints there. Between those quotes, coupled with what everyone’s already heard, we’d bet money that’s the way “Green Lantern” will ultimately go down.
Campbell is doing the rounds promoting his most recent film, “The Edge Of Darkness” starring Mel Gibson. So he also confirmed over the weekend those old reports that the Lantern film would definitely be closer in tone to “Iron Man” (lighter, fun) than it would be to “Batman Begins” (dark, grim, etc.).
“Green Lantern” also stars Blake Lively and hits theaters June 17, 2011.
